Me and God

“We love because he first loved us”

First heard the words

When I was three years old

‘God so loved’

That’s what I was told

Didn’t know anything else

Like the stars in the sky

How could I not believe

When it was right before my eyes

I took a big old breath

There was nothing else

There was me and God

Swinging on a swing

Birds out chirping

Grass growing so green

Days were simpler then

Didn’t know what it was

To turn my back on God

Because He was all there was

But I found

How dark it gets

Sullied by a world

Full of regrets

But it was me and God

Walking hand in hand

Days were simpler

And he was my best friend

But oh how that all changed

Sitting here 50 years later

Wish it was the same

I still love the Lord

More than I thought I would

Found all my victories

Rooted in Faith from my childhood

Not so simple now

Yet in a way it is

Have to look around

Find the beauty he brings

He’s still there every day

Guess it’s me who always runs away

I pause 

I think

Then I pray…

There was me and God

Didn’t know what it was

To turn my back on God

Because He was all there was

Still find my breath grows cold

Have to cry out

Let go…

And it’s me and God

Walking hand in hand

Days may not be simple

But he’s still my best friend

He’s always been.
